Our Story

Wildflower Mountain Ranch was founded in 2021 when founders Bridget and Jeff Kilgrow decided that the services available for children with mental illness and behavior challenges were not delivering the level of services they wanted; not only for their own adopted children but for the many adoptive and otherwise struggling youth. In their commitment by applying their experience and wisdom to make better programs available, they believe that people can become empowered by their own abilities and gain the confidence to fulfill their potential. They gathered a board of directors with personal understanding and beliefs in changing the community of residential treatment for girls.

"Good women can be wild too."

Sarah Lake

Youth Mentor, Equine Coordinator

Through my experiences and hard work, my goal is to bring a unique blend of my studies  and hands-on experience to my role as an Equine-Assisted Therapy Director. With a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a current pursuit of a Graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Bradley University, I aim to bridge the realms of science and psychology in my approach to healing. My philosophy centers on the parallels between human-animal connections and communication. Through my extensive experience as a wilderness therapy field guide, seasoned ranch hand, and horse trainer, I have cultivated an environment where individuals can engage in transformative experiences. At the heart of my work is the belief that one-on-one interactions with horses in our training program serve as a catalyst for building trust-based relationships grounded in practical communication skills and intentions.

With over 25 years of riding experience spanning disciplines such as polo, hunter jumpers, mounted shooting, horsepacking, and cattle work, I embody a deep-seated passion for equine pursuits. Influenced by icons such as Monty Roberts, Clinton Anderson, and Buck Brannaman, as well as a network of talented equine enthusiasts who have become like family, I am committed to leveraging the healing and strength-building opportunities that animals provide. Through my dedication and hard work, I foster an environment where individuals can explore their capabilities while embracing the therapeutic power of human-animal connections.
